The Phoenicia fire district facility was old, insufficient in area and was inadequate to provide shelter in case of disasters such as floods. We looked initially at renovating the existing firehouse, pictured, and I started developing plans and cost estimates. I convinced the officers that this was throwing good money after bad. As a volunteer firefighter and first responder, I was asked by my fire chief to develop a feasibility study for a new facility. I developed a program, schematic plan and cost estimate. Through the Ulster Chamber of Commerce, I found a grant writer who offered to match half of our cost through grants. We obtained a prime site (pictured) from a local developer for $1 and found the rest of the funding through the sale of the existing site to the local library. The proposal was voted down by the membership in 2004 but with new leadership in place in 2008, we will try again. The grant writer did obtain funds for new equipment that was purchased.
